The Dunedin City Council bought it in February for $128,000 and called for public feedback on its future.

The building played an instrumental role in the heyday of Dunedin music.

About 200 people gave feedback on its future and the council said more than 50 percent of them supported the idea of using it as a venue for performing arts, live music and theatre.

The feedback will go before the council's community and culture committee next month.

The council said the venue contributed to the career development of many nationally and internationally known Dunedin musicians by providing a 'step up' from pub and club concerts.

Built in 1896, the building was called Her Majesty's Theatre while Queen Victoria was monarch, then changed to His Majesty's Theatre during King Edward VII's reign. The adjoining Agricultural Hall was built in 1902.
