Campbell took out the award at the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Awards, held earlier this morning.

Campbell credited his executive producer Pip Keane and the Checkpoint team for his win, and also gave credit to RNZ heads Carol Hirschfeld and Paul Thompson, who are masterminding the multi-media development of RNZ.

He said he was delighted to be reaching out and engaging with an audience who were not traditionally RNZ listeners.

The win has been enthusiastically greeted by Campbell's listeners and colleagues on Twitter:

RNZ podcast The 9th Floor was also on the shortlist in the politics and business category, won by Al Jazeera English.
