Police were at the scene near Towai north of Whangarei, where a woman person died.

They had been diverting traffic through Ruapekapeka Road, with the highway closed in both directions, but that was now blocked after a truck tried to get through and became stuck.

They warned the only route available for trucks between Whangarei and Bay of Islands was via Kaikohe and Mangakahia Road - State Highway 15.

Cars and light vehicles were being diverted through Towai Road, Callaghan Road, and Maromaku Road.

Police said motorists using the route would need to be patient and factor in longer travel times.

The Towai crash was the second fatal collison in Northland this week, after a car with two German women crossed the centre line and hit a truck on Wednesday.

A man and woman in a car behind them also died when the truck hit their vehicle, and another victim is in Middlemore hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency services are still at the scene of this afternoon's fatal at Towai.

Meanwhile, one person is dead after a crash involving four cars near Morven on Waimate Highway north of Ōāmaru this afternoon.

St John Ambulance said another person had serious injuries and two others had minor injuries.
