He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Wellington jeweller Paul Miet, 45 years ago, but the charge was later downgraded to manslaughter.

Wickliffe was released on parole for the first time in 1987 and has since been recalled five times after further offending.

That included kidnapping, drink driving, aggravated robbery, and manufacturing and possessing methamphetamine.

He is one of the few people to have escaped twice from the high security Auckland prison at Paremoremo.

Wickliffe was parolled for a sixth time in May.

The Herald reported he was convicted of drink driving and sentenced last month to community work.

The full Parole Board decision not to send Wickliffe back to jail has yet to be released.
