A 5-year-old boy has drowned after falling from a wharf in the Auckland suburb of Devonport.
Police said he fell from a wharf in Torpedo Bay shortly after 3.15pm.
Two people went into the water to try and rescue the boy but he was picked up shortly afterwards by the Coastguard.
Paramedics who tried to give the boy CPR were unsuccessful.
One of the people who went into the water received medical treatment at the scene but was not taken to hospital.
The boy's death has been referred to the coroner.
