Tolley can influence principals on national standards

Primary school principals say the Minister of Education has the opportunity this week to influence their attitudes to the national standards in reading, writing and maths.

Anne Tolley is scheduled to speak at the Principals Federation conference, which starts in Queenstown on Tuesday.

The federation's president, Ernie Buutveld, says the minister's address will be a key factor in members' decisions about the standards.

The Auckland Primary Principals Association last week recommended that its members do not attend any more national standards training.

Mr Buutveld says principals in other regions share the Auckland association's views but the federation's current stance is to re-engage with the Government and try to address principals' concerns.
