Opotoki District Council estimates it will need to spend $300,000 on cleaning up flooding in Bay of Plenty.
More than 300mm of rain fell at the weekend, causing widespread flooding, road closures and slips.
The district council's engineering service manager, Jim Finlay, says most of the major damage is to roading with slips, and road shoulders being washed away.
Mr Finlay says the bill will put financial strain on the council, coming on the back of a storm in June that caused about $140,000 worth of damage.
Another heavy downpour is expected on Tuesday night, and Bay of Plenty Regional Council says staff and contractors are working to get the water off farmland as quickly as possible before the next rainfall.
