Hospitality consultancy Horwath HTL said hotel prices in New Zealand had been increasing over the last five years.

Director Steven Hamilton said that was due to growing demand from international visitors and a shortage of rooms.

"We'll be coming into the summer season to the next few weeks and couple of months we'll see hotel room rates in Auckland quite expensive by comparison with any historical levels.

Mr Hamilton said hotel prices in the country were still cheaper than rates in cities like Melbourne and Sydney.

He said the average price for one night in a hotel in Auckland was currently just over $200.
