A car crashed into three pedestrians the Far North killing one person.
Police were called to Aranui Straight, just north of Kaitaia, at 1.15am.
One pedestrians died at the scene, another was taken to hospital in a critical condition and the third person has moderate injuries.
The road reopened after being closed for several hours.
Police said they were speaking to the driver.
