School standards training boycott call grows

7:59 pm on 1 July 2010

Southland's primary school principals have joined their Auckland counterparts in calling for a boycott of training sessions for the new national standards for reading, writing and maths.

Southland Primary Principals Association president Wendy Ryan says teachers are finding the standards confusing and unworkable.

Ms Ryan says Southland teachers had decided to attend the training sessions in an effort to make the standards fit with their curriculum, but found the trainers could not answer their questions about how that will work.

She says a trial is needed first to resolve the problems with the standards.

Minister disappointed with some reporting

Meanwhile, Education Minister Anne Tolley says she is disappointed that some schools are sending home student reports focusing only on the new national standards.

The first reports to include assessments against the benchmarks for reading, writing and maths are being sent to parents.

Ms Tolley told Morning Report the reports should reflect all the things the children are doing at school.
