Excise tax increase on alcohol takes effect

8:23 am on 1 July 2010

The annual rise in excise tax on alcohol comes into effect on Thursday, increasing 2.1%.

Distilled Spirits Association chief executive Thomas Chin says spirits drinkers are being treated unfairly as the spirit excise tax is nearly twice that of wine and most beers.

More than 70% of the retail price of a typical bottle of spirits is tax, he says.

Mr Chin says the latest increase means the excise tax on a 1 litre standard bottle of spirits will rise to almost $20.
