National Council of Women may lose charity status

The umbrella organisation for women's groups is the latest in a string of high-profile organisations facing the loss of charitable status.

The Charities Commission is recommending the National Council of Women, which represents 46 groups, be deregistered.

The commission says charities are deregistered if one of their main purposes is political advocacy, but National Council of Women president Elizabeth Bang maintains the organisation is apolitical.

She says people will think twice about donating to an organisation that isn't a charity, because they will miss out on tax breaks.

Earlier this year Greenpeace and the Sensible Sentencing Trust were deregistered.
