A spokesperson said emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 1.30pm.

Surf Life Saving regional southern manager Stu Bryce said three people were rescued from the water this afternoon.

He said weekday surf life saving patrols have not started yet, so the swimmers were helped by a local surf school and members of the public.

Mr Bryce said there have been reports of more people in trouble in the water but that had been a false alarm.
