Kerikeri and Kaitaia residents are being asked to save water as treatment plants in both towns struggle to cope with unusually high water use.
Daily water use in Kerikeri is a third higher than at the same time last year while daily use in Kaitaia is 15 percent higher.
Andy Finch from the Far North District Council said water treatment plants in both towns were reaching capacity.
He said residents and businesses were being encouraged to conserve water now, before water restrictions needed to be put into place.
This is a precaution in anticipation of the summer dry, which often coincides with extra visitors to the district, he said.
Kerikeri residents have already had a drop in water pressure and the council said it would continue to monitor the situation.
Christchurch eyeing water restrictions
Christchurch City Council said it would start to limit when people can water their garden, if usage isn't reduced over this weekend.
The council said last weekend, which was hot, the city used half a billion litres of water - the highest consumption since 2009.
Council water manager John Mackie said on Tuesday, when they warned people about conserving water, it had the opposite effect and use increased.
Mr Mackie said demand was likely to soar over this weekend with high temperatures predicted.
He said if results showed on Monday that water reservoirs had not been at full capacity for three consecutive days, restrictions would be brought in.
