Man charged with rape on cruise ship

A 33-year-old has been charged with rape while on board a cruise ship docked in Port Chalmers yesterday.

The man is set to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

Detective Sergeant John MacDade said the victim and the accused are known to each other.

Only the cruise ship Noordam docked in Port Chalmers yesterday, leaving the port just after 6pm yesterday.

Court documents show the man is facing one charge of rape and one of unlawful sexual connection.

The maximum penalty for the charges is 20 years' imprisonment.
