Man arrested after pointing gun at police

Lower Hutt Police have arrested a man over an incident in which a gun was pointed at them.

They said this happened after the driver of a white Honda failed to stop at 3am this morning.

They began a pursuit of the car, abandoned it for safety reasons, then renewed the pursuit in the Hutt suburb of Woburn.

Officers used road spikes to try to stop the car, which crashed into a parked car before continuing to flee.

The occupants also threw objects out of the window, police said.

The driver later crashed into another parked car and was arrested.

A loaded homemade firearm was found in the vehicle.

A 30-year-old man is due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court today, charged with using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, aggravated failing to stop and dangerous driving.

Police said they been seeking the same man since October over several other charges including aggravated failing to stop, dangerous driving, possession of ammunition, possession of an offensive weapon and theft.
