Bigger kahawai catch could be allowed

The Ministry of Fisheries may allow recreational fishers to catch more kahawai.

Last year, fishing groups unsuccessfully challenged the Ministry of Fisheries in the Supreme Court, arguing that the inclusion of kahawai in the Quota Management System in 2004 was done without adequate consultation and that amateur fishers were suffering.

The ministry is now proposing to allow kahawai to be fished to 60% of its biomass - the original level before harvesting started. Currently it is fished to 40% of its biomass.

The ministry is taking submissions on the proposal.
