Firm bidding to run Mt Eden jail criticised in UK

A prison reform group wants the Government to consider problems at a British jail run by a firm that wants to enter New Zealand.

The Chief Inspector of Prisons in the UK, Dame Anne Owers, has criticised the Wolds prison in Yorkshire for drug use among inmates and the weakness of staff in confronting difficult prisoners.

The facility is run by G4S, one of four firms bidding to run the joint Mt Eden-Auckland Central Remand Prison.

The Howard League for Penal Reform says the British report is a cause for concern, and the Corrections Minister should look very closely at the firm.
