Govt should force firms to clean up, says lobby group

A waste reduction lobby group says the Government should use its power to force businesses to foot the bill for disposal schemes for their used products.

The Get Real Campaign says the Government's inaction means the cost of disposing of items such as computers, refrigerant gases and agricultural chemicals is carried by everyone.

The campaigners say that a 2008 law gives the Government power to force certain industries to pay for recycling or disposal schemes and that it shouldn't be relying on them to do that voluntarily.

But the Ministry of the Environment says several sectors have set up waste reduction programmes, and it's optimistic more will soon follow suit.
