A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run in Lower Hutt.

Yesterday, police said they were called to a family harm incident on Mayor Drive in Kelson on Monday around 9.30am.

A member of the public said he saw a man assaulting a woman and intervened to help her.

He said he confronted the man about his behaviour and tried to prevent him from leaving.

The accused then allegedly got into his vehicle and accelerated directly at the good samaritan, who suffered head injuries and is now recovering at home.

Detective Sergeant Lee Underhill said the victim "was lucky to not have received critical injuries".

"The victim's actions and intentions were admirable and show that our community is full of people who will not stand by and watch this type of violent behaviour."

The accused will be appearing in the Lower Hutt District Court today.
