Police have found the car believe to have been involved in an incident which has left a person in hospital with critical head injuries.

Two men were injured last night at about 1.40am in Tripoli Road in Tamaki, Auckland, after a car ran into a group of people involved in a street fight.

Detective Senior Sergeant Geoff Baber said they have not yet established whether the car and driver were connected with the fighting groups.

The car is being forensically examined today.

He said there were 30 to 40 people at the scene and although witnesses were not being being forthcoming, progress was being made.

Mr Baber said they would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has subsequently heard who was involved in the incident.

He said he understood that more than just the two people were hit by the car, but only two victims have been identified so far.

Both of the injured men are still in hospital, and the most seriously injured man is still unconscious with head injuries.

The other man is in a serious condition and has been spoken to by police.

The scene at Tripoli Road is still closed as the Serious Crash Unit completes its examination.
