Apology wanted by Human Rights Commission

8:26 am on 13 July 2010

The Human Rights Commission is demanding Television New Zealand Breakfast host Paul Henry, issue a full apology, for saying singer Susan Boyle looked retarded.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority has ordered TVNZ to issue a statement on the Breakfast programme, after finding the comments breached its taste and decency standard.

Henry has previously said he is sorry that some people have taken what he said in a way he never intended.

But the Human Rights Commission, which received more than 300 complaints, says the apology was half baked.

It says Henry needs to take responsibility for what he said and issue a full apology.

TVNZ says it will abide by the BSA's decision and will issue a statement on Breakfast within a month.
