The Green Party says all New Zealand should have a say on a proposed gold mine on the West Coast.
The Westco Lagan timber company wants to diversify its operations.
But residents of Ruatapu, just south of Hokitika, are against a gold mine there. They say the ground could be contaminated from old milling operations in the area.
Green MP Kevin Hague says the issue needs to be viewed at a national level if the ground is contaminated.
He says the company wants to mine for gold just 15 metres from some houses.
