Wairoa council supports Moko memorial at Mahia

Wairoa District Council says it will support a memorial for Moko the dolphin, if the Department of Conservation decides Mahia Peninsula should be his final resting place.

The body of an animal believed to be the friendly bottlenosed dolphin, which drew crowds to beaches in Hawke's Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty, was found last week on Matakana Island near Tauranga.

Moko first made his home in the waters off Mahia.

Wairoa's Mayor Les Probert says Tuesday's council meeting agreed a memorial on the peninsula would be fitting and the council would put up some of the cost.
