A man has died after getting into trouble in the water at Auckland's Awhitu Regional Park, where he was fishing with two children.

The trio had walked at low tide to fish from a small island about 200-metres offshore on Manukau Harbour.

They got caught short by the rising incoming tide on the way back.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene at about 12.45pm.

When it arrived, the trio had been brought to shore, and people were performing CPR on the man.

He died at the scene and the children were flown to Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition after swallowing water.

It's the second dramatic rescue for some of the helicopter crew, who also attended the incident in the Waitakere Ranges yesterday where two teenagers died.
