A Dunedin man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 16-year-old girl on the weekend.

The 30-year-old doctor cannot be identified because has been given interim name suppression by the Dunedin District Court.
The man accused stood briefly in the dock this afternoon after his arrest late last night.
He did not make a plea to the murder charge and his lawyer said he has not had time to let his friends and family know so needed his name protected until his next appearance in a fortnight.
Three men stood in the public gallery swearing at the accused as he was led away.
Police said they found the teenager dead when they were called to the house on Saturday morning.
RNZ has spoken to the victim's family, who named her as Amber-Rose Rush.
Police said the man knew Ms Rush they were not looking for anyone else in relation to her death.
A house in the Dunedin suburb of Corstorphine has been cordoned off since Saturday.
A statement from Ms Rush's family said "she was everything".
"She was the heart of our family. She was the most amazing daughter, aunty, sister anyone could ever dream of having.
"She had such an amazing life in front of her."
Police crime scene tape criss-crosses the front of the house in Clermiston Avenue, barring the entrance and tying down three cars.
