Two people have died in a crash between a car and a petrol tanker near the Marsden Point oil refinery.
The vehicles collided at about 12.10pm on State Highway 15A, where it meets Rama Rd, near Whangārei.
Police said the serious crash unit was at the scene and State Highway 15A was closed due to the incident.
The New Zealand Transport Agency asked motorists to delay their journey or avoid the area.
State Highway 1 in Oakleigh, just south of Whangārei, has reopened after it was closed briefly due to a separate crash.
