Joint approach needed to counter online radicalisation

Putting a stop to terror groups targeting people through social media will take a united approach, a PhD student says.

A teenager who had been radicalised online and attempted to carry out a violent attack in Christchurch, was this week sentenced in the district court to two years' intensive supervision.

The police said he terrified a large number of people, but all other details of what happened have been suppressed.

Suvo Bandopadhyaya studies how groups such as Islamic State use social media for propaganda and radicalisation.

He said authorities, anti-terrorism groups, and social media companies need to work together to use their expertise to make sure platforms like Facebook and Twitter can't be used in such a way.
