A pilot approaching the airport just before midday spotted the drone and reported it to air traffic controllers, Airways New Zealand said.

The incident was reported to the police and airport operations were halted for 30 minutes.

About 20 aircraft circled while they waited to land and one was diverted.

The airport said operations had since returned to normal.
