Some consumers continue to live beyond their means, a survey by credit agency Dun & Bradstreet has found.

The agency surveyed 1000 people to find out what they expect to spend and save during the period up until September and how much debt they have.

More than a third of respondents say they will use their credit card to pay for goods they can not really afford.

The survey found women, the middle aged, and wealthier households are feeling the pinch of higher interest rates.

Nearly half of households say recent interest rate rises have put a squeeze on their finances.

A fifth of respondents expect their debts to increase in the next three months.

Credit card billings edged up 1% in June compared with the previous month.

On an annual basis, Reserve Bank figures show total billings rose 4.5% compared with a year ago.

Economists expect the Reserve Bank to raise the Official Cash Rate by 0.25 percentage points next week and to keep raising it gradually.

The OCR was raised to 2.75% on 10 June after being at 2.5% since 30 April, 2009.
