New computer at NIWA for weather forecasting

A $13 million supercomputer to help forecasting of severe weather has been installed at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

The supercomputer, which weighs 18 tonnes, is one of the most powerful in the world for environmental research.

NIWA says accurate forecasting is vital to the growth of farming and horticulture, and the infrastructure and renewable energy industries.
