A Far North man has been charged with cruelty to animals after two hunting dogs were burned alive in a ute fire over the weekend.

Detective Sergeant Rhys Johnston said the man, aged 25, was brought in to the Kaitaia police station last night by family members.

He has also been charged with arson and the theft of a Toyota Hilux.

The owner had set his vehicle up for a hunting trip the evening before when it was stolen and later set alight, with the two dogs still in their box on the rear tray.

Mr Johnston said it was upsetting for the Broadwood community and people will be reassured by the arrest.

The arrested man is appearing in the Kaitaia District Court today.
