A 27-year-old Canadian man has been jailed for 15 years for smuggling eight kilograms of methamphetamine inside a concrete footstool.
Kyle Robertson McCready was arrested in October 2016 as he was trying to leave New Zealand, after he was linked to a seized air freight shipment from the United States.
The footstool was one of the items in the shipment and when Customs officers smashed it open, they found 18 meth-filled packages wrapped in plastic and carbon paper.
The meth had a street value of up to $8 million. Forensic testing showed it had a purity level of 80 percent, Customs said.
McCready was found guilty in January, following a jury trial in the Manukau District Court.
He was sentenced yesterday. He will have to serve at least six years in prison before facing deportation.
