The first child died at the scene when a car and a truck collided and the second child died in Starship Hospital today.

Police said both children were correctly restrained in their car seats.

One other person remains in a critical condition and another is serious.

On Friday Senior Sergeant Fane Troy from Bay of Plenty Road Policing said the gender and age of the child who died, and that of the injured, would not be available until all next of kin were informed.

He said it would take some time to contact them as some family members were overseas.

The Serious Crash Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Team are investigating the crash, in the south-bound lane of State Highway 1 north of Waiouru, between Waipakihi Rd and Rangipo Intake Rd.

So far four people have died on the roads over the long Easter weekend.

Police have asked motorists to be patient, and watch their following distances.

On Saturday a collision between a truck and a motorcycle happened at the corner of Edmund and Clayton roads in Rotorua.

One person died at the scene.

Another person died in a crash at Tirohanga Road between between Tokoroa and Taupō in the Bay of Plenty.
