Driver injured in police chase crash

6:25 am on 25 July 2010

A man who is in Palmerston North hospital after crashing his car while being pursued by police was in a stable condition in hospital on Saturday.

Police say a car was seen driving too fast in a 50 km/h zone in Tremaine Avenue, about 1am on Saturday.

They say officers chased the car for less than a minute before it crashed into the side of a turning semi-trailer truck.

A spokesperson for Palmerston North hospital said on Saturday the injured 20-year-old man was in a stable condition in a general ward, where he was being treated for abdominal and leg injuries.

Police say the man had no drivers' licence.

On Thursday, a review of the police policy for pursuing fleeing vehicles recommended extending the rules for abandoning chases.

A senior officer travelling as a passenger will be allowed to call off a chase, rather than waiting for the communications controller to do so.

Pursuits must also cease if police know who the alleged offender is, or if they lose sight of the fleeing vehicle.
