Dog bite puts paid to rottweiler promotion

A petfood promotion has been cancelled after a staff member at a West Auckland pet store had part of her lip bitten off by a rottweiler.

The Animates Pet Store chain was running a promotion for customers to bring their rottweiler to any of its stores and receive free dog food.

Waitakere City Council manager of animal welfare Neil Wells says a Westgate shop worker was bitten on her lower lip by a rottweiler, about 11am on Friday.

He says CCTV footage shows neither the dog nor the dog owner was at fault, but rather the victim had put her face into the area of the dog to offer him a treat.

Mr Wells says it was a serious bite with flesh ripped off, however the dog will not be destroyed because it was under control at the time.
