A toddler was run over by a family member backing out of a driveway in the south Auckland suburb of Weymouth on Sunday.
Police say the 22-month-old girl was struck at about 2pm after the driver was unaware she had left the house to follow an older sibling.
Family members contacted an ambulance but the toddler died at the scene.
The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident.
