Police in Counties Manukau have named a man they are seeking as they investigate life-threatening head injuries suffered by a baby boy.

Six-month-old Cezar Taylor is in a serious but stable condition after being admitted to Starship Hospital on Friday.

Police say the baby was admitted to hospital with severe head injuries that are consistent with shaking and blunt force trauma.

They want to talk to his mother's boyfriend, James Allan Hemana, in relation to the case.

The 30-year-old also goes by the name James Sylva, and has connections in Whangarei, Wellsford and Waikato.

Police say the injuries may have been sustained over a period of time.
