Police are "hugely disappointed" that more than 40 drivers were caught speeding in Havelock North within two hours, they say.

They patrolled Waimarama Road between 6.20am and 8.20am yesterday and caught 44 drivers going over the 50km/h speed limit.

In one case, they recorded speeds of up to 98km/h in the 50km/h zone.

All the drivers were given tickets, including one $630 fine, police said.

Sergeant Steven Murray said the results were extremely disappointing, not only because of the number of drivers caught, but also the speeds.

He said the drivers were putting themselves and other people at risk.
