Four weeks on and still no trace of Carmen Thomas

Updated at 7:30pm on 30 July 2010

The whereabouts of 32-year-old Remuera woman Carmen Thomas remain a mystery, four weeks after she went missing.

Detective Inspector Mark Benefield says officers are working through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and following up on information from the public - but they still don't know where she is or what has become of her.

Mr Benefield says they are also trying to find Ms Thomas's car keys and distinctive turquoise handbag.

Her bank account remains untouched and her car was found abandoned in Hamilton a few days after she was reported missing, with the spare tyre on and the jack missing.

Given that she has a five-year-old son and her mother has travelled from South Africa to help find her, Mr Benefield says it's reasonable to assume she would have come forward by now if she was alive.

The disappearance is looking sinister, he says.

At a news conference on Friday morning, Ms Thomas's mother, Teresa Scott, said she was desperate for someone to let her know where her daughter is and how she's doing.
