New Zealand's Scott Dixon has won the 2008 Indycar series in the United States.

It is the second time he has won the series. He previously won in 2003.

Dixon also won this year's Indianapolis 500, America's greatest motor race, on 25 May.

The 2008 series was finalised at the Indy 300 race at the Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday.

Brazilian Helio Castroneves was first, despite being forced to start from the back of the grid.

Dixon was second in a photo-finish in a result described as the closest in the history of the league.

Dixon went into the 200-lap race with a lead of 30 points.

One of Dixon's first financial backers was celebrating his success on Monday.

Peter "PJ" Johnston led a team which began funding Dixon when he was 12 years old and says watching the race made him proud of those who spearheaded the funding drive in its early years.

Mr Johnston says he is in regular communication with Dixon, who could be back in New Zealand within a fortnight.
