Coroner says babies have right to be in safe while sleeping

The Coroner in Hawke's Bay says parents need to be reminded of the danger of having a baby sleep in an unsafe environment.

Chris Devonport says a 17-week old boy from Napier found dead in March, always slept in the same bed as his mother.

Mr Devonport says it was the 10th death of an infant in a co-sleeping situation, which he has dealt with since June 2008.

He says some parents regard the practice of sleeping with their baby as their right.

But the coroner says babies have rights too, which include being placed in a sleeping environment, where there is no possibility of them being asphyxiated.
