Compulsory ski helmets foreseen

The Mountain Safety Council says it does not want the wearing of helmets by skiers and snowboarders made compulsory, but believes there is growing momentum for it to happen.

Mount Hutt ski field had its fourth fatality of the season on Friday when a snowboarder died on the mountain.

The Mountain Safety Council says it strongly recommends skiers and mountain climbers wear a helmet, but notes that it is ultimately up to the individual.

However, a woman who died on Mount Hutt Skifield this season was wearing a helmet.

Avalanche programme manager Andrew Hobman says opinion remains divided over whether the helmets can prevent injuries or deaths.
