1:06 pm on 10 August 2010

An avalanche on the South Face of Mt Hutt forced the suspension of some ski operations on Tuesday.

The manager of skifield company NZ Ski, Dave Wilson, says he believes all skiers have been accounted for.

He says the avalanche occured on the South Face and the 2,000 skiers on the field were told to go to their cars.

Mr Wilson says its not yet known what set off the avalanche.

A metre of new snow fell at the field on Monday giving the main ski area its best covering for the season.
