Christchurch has more sex offenders living in community

Figures from the Department of Corrections show more convicted sex offenders are living in the community in Christchurch than there are in other cities.

At the end of June this year, 131 offenders were living in Christchurch.

The figures from the Community Probation Service show 127 offenders are living in central Auckland, 92 in Wellington, and 79 in Dunedin and Invercargill.

Of the 131 living in Christchurch, 81 had committed sexual offences against a child aged 16 and under.

Fifty-five new orders for parole and release conditions for sex offending were begun in Christchurch in the past financial year, while 65 were started in Auckland and 44 in Wellington.

The probation service says those figures don't necessarily reflect the number of offenders released into the community as one offender could be released on more than one order.
