Parkinson's sufferer granted bail after weeks in jail

A bail address has been found for a 69-year-old man with Parkinson's disease who has spent nearly six weeks on remand in Rimutaka Prison.

The man, whose name is suppressed, reappeared in Upper Hutt District Court on Wednesday on two charges of indecent assault and one of common assault.

His lawyer, Michael Bott, told the court a suitable address had been found where the man could live while on bail, but asked that details be suppressed.

Judge Patrick Grace granted bail with a 24-hour curfew unless the man has to go elsewhere for medical treatment.

The man suffered another Parkinson's attack shortly before his case was called and was experiencing tremors as he stood in the dock. He was remanded until 1 September.

Mr Bott says the case highlights the need for remand facilities that meet the needs of elderly people appearing before the courts.

There are specialised youth courts for those who are vulnerable because of their age and a special court may be needed for those who are vulnerable due to their disabilities, he says.
