MP pleased at appointment of commissioner

Tamaki MP Allan Peachey says he is delighted a commissioner has been appointed at Selwyn College.

Mr Peachey was critical in 2005 of the way the college was run and says it has struggled for some time.

Education Minister Anne Tolley on Tuesday dismissed the board of trustees, citing another unfavourable report from the Education Review Office.

Mr Peachey says about 80% of local students have chosen to go elsewhere because school governance was out of sync with the community.

The commissioner, Collene Roche, will oversee the school for an indefinite period.

The Ministry of Education says there will be no disruption to students.

Northern manager Bruce Adin says the appointment will bring clarity to the problems facing the school where a specialist advisor has been in place since early 2007.

Mr Adin says stronger intervention was needed.
