A 71-year-old man has drowned at New Brighton beach near Christchurch.
Police say the incident occurred about 9.30am on Wednesday near the pier.
It is understood the man was going for his daily swim and began to struggle in the water.
St John Ambulance says efforts to revive the man failed.
