Drowned man fell from boat, say police

Police say a man they initially thought had drowned after falling from rocks on the west coast of Waikato, actually died after falling from his boat.

The body of the man, 53, was recovered from the surf off Te Kaha Point on Thursday afternoon.

Police at first thought he had fallen from nearby rocks while fishing.

But they now know he went out alone on his boat and was swept into the water when it failed to negotiate the sandbar at the mouth of the Raglan Harbour.

He was not wearing a life jacket.

Earlier on Thursday, a boat capsized on the same sandbar, but all three people on board were rescued. They were wearing life jackets.
