Youth in custody after ambush of police officer

9:37 am on 7 February 2009

A teenager accused of throwing a bottle that struck a police sergeant in an ambush by boy racers last Friday night has appeared in court in Christchurch.

The accused, 17, faces charges of unlawful assembly and assault with a weapon on 31 January.

He was remanded in custody on Friday and will appear in the District Court again on Monday, 9 February.

The hearing was previously scheduled for Saturday. Police says it's possible the hearing was brought forward to avoid supporters converging on the court.
